OBONGI, UGANDA: The site foreman of Nyongos and Sons Ltd Mr Othieno Peter has been arrested for failing to renovate eight classrooms block as per the contract awarded to him early this year under the Development Response to Displacement Impacts Project (DRDIP).

The arrest of Othieno was ordered by Obongi Resident District Commissioner Mr Mpimbaza Samuel Hashaka and the district vice chairperson Mr Drami Paul on Friday afternoon while monitoring government-funded programs in Palorinya Sub-county, Obongi district.

In 2022, the Obongi district local government awarded the contract to renovate the eight classrooms to Nyongos and Sons Ltd at over 400 million shillings and groundbreaking was done in February this year but no work has been done since then.

The contractor instead removed the roof, removed the plaster and demolished part of the classrooms after which the site was abandoned. Some of the pupils now study under a temporally makeshift tent which is always blown away by the wind whenever it rains.

By the time the RDC and district vice chairperson arrived at Palorinya PS on Friday afternoon, the teachers were abandoning the tents due to the coming rains.
The pupils told the leaders that they were studying under difficult conditions in the temporary tents.
