LC1 Chairperson, Secretary arrested over Lira torture video

LIRA, UGANDA: The Police in Lira District have arrested two suspects who appeared in the video that went viral video on social media on the torture of a female suspect in Lira City West Division.

In the video, the victim identified as Akello Jacky, 21, a resident and businesswoman of Adidikweno B Cell in Boke Ward was on Tuesday, July 18, tied with a rope and hanged up on a tree by a group of people who whipped her accusing her of stealing a motorcycle.

Another victim identified as Apio Oliver, 17, also a resident of Adidikgweno B cell sustained injuries in the torture incident according to police.

The North Kyoga Region police spokesperson, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema yesterday noted that upon learning of the circulating inhuman video, police swung into action and apprehended the two suspects, while a manhunt for others still at large is still on.

He identified the suspects as the LC1 Chairman Odongo Gilbert, 54, and one Ongullu Benard, 48, the defence secretary B of cell Adidikgweno Cell, Boke Ward in Lira City East Division.

SP Okema said the two have been charged with torture and statements were also recorded from the victims to aid in the police investigations.

“We strongly condemn such action and encourage community members to always arrest and hand over someone they believe has committed or is about to commit an offence to the police for investigation and possible prosecution before the courts of law,” he noted.
