OBONGI, UGANDA: Police in Obongi District in northern Uganda have arrested two ghost teachers with another on the run on allegations of earning salaries without performing their professional duties.

The two; Aliga Rashid a teacher at Alibabito Primary School and Adiga Tom a teacher at Ewafa Primary School in Ewafa subcounty were arrested on Monday, July 31, on the orders of Obongi Resident District Commissioner Mr Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka.

The one who mysteriously disappeared and is being hunted has been identified as Ms Konyo Norah Mane. The trio are all accused of trying to sneak back to Obongi during the validation of civil servants.

While monitoring UPE schools in the district, RDC Mpimbaza, his Deputy Mr Jawoko Denis and the Chairperson LC3 Ewafa subcounty took note of teachers who absconded from duty and made a follow-up on them during the validation exercise of civil servants.

The headteachers of the two primary schools informed the RDC’s office that they had written several complaints to the CAO and DEO but no action had been taken against the trio.

Konyo Norah Mane is said to be doing business in Southern Sudan but yet still on the payroll busy earning a monthly salary.

Hasaka, the RDC Obongi told this publication that his office is still continuing with operations against all absentee teachers and those who come late in UPE and USE schools.

Last year, Obongi was among the worst-performing districts in the country in PLE and “O” levels due to teachers’ absenteeism.

Out of 13 first grades in PLE obtained last year, only two pupils were Ugandan citizens while the rest were South Sudanese refugees.

In O’level there were nine first grades showing a low level of performance in the UCE examination.
Only one was a Ugandan while the rest were South Sudanese refugees.
