18-year-old arrested over murder of Kole businesswoman

KOLE, UGANDA: The Territorial Police in Kole District have arrested one Odongo Jasper aged 18- years- old on allegations of killing a businesswoman and stealing from her properties worth millions of shillings.

The deceased identified as Elya Silima, 60, a resident of Korner village, ilera parish, Ayer Sub-County in Kole District was allegedly murdered on Tuesday evening.

According to North Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, preliminary findings reveal that on August 1, 2023, at around 0500 hours, Ms Silima woke up together with her four workers namely; Okabo Brian, Ondyambo Denis, Okello Allan and Odongo Jasper.

However, three of the workers together with the deceased’s son Baine Isaac, 30, went to Lira-City to sell eggs leaving the deceased at home with one staff called Odongo Jasper, but on return at about 20:30 hours, they didn’t find anybody at home, which forced one Baine (deceased’s son) to demand the whereabouts of his mother, only to discover him dead in the house.

The son also found when his mother’s phones and an unspecified amount of money plus other items missing and the colleagues also discovered that the prime suspect (Jasper Odongo) had removed all his belongings and was nowhere to be seen by that time.

SP Okema says “A case of aggravated robbery and murder was immediately filed at Apii police post and the scene of the crime was examined and documented by the District Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO) together with a team of other detectives from the homicide squad.”

He added that the suspect was arrested from his hiding place in Minakulu in Oyam District and is currently detained at Kole CPS.

Police were also able to recover exhibits from the suspect, including a sum of money amounting to Ugx 17,450,000 (Seventeen million four hundred and fifty thousand shillings).

Other items recovered with the suspect included; Screen LED TV, a Smartphone (Tecno Camon), a small phone, a TV Remote, Sugar (4 kgs), a small bag( backpack), a watch, two-bed sheets, and Cooking oil (two packets of two litres.

“It’s a very unfortunate incident, as police we condemn that act very strongly and commit ourselves to investigate the matter to its final conclusion, we call for calmness from the relatives and members of the public” SP Okema said, before assuring the public that inquiries are ongoing by Police as investigation gets underway.

The deceased body was conveyed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital’s mortuary pending postmortem test and results.
