Senior police boss’ sister murdered after rejected sexual advances

KAMPALA, UGANDA: Police in Kampala are on the hunt for a suspected killer who murdered one Mercy Atulinda, 37, a sister of a top police boss after rejecting his several sexual advances.

Atulinda, a sister of Senior Superintendent of Police, SSP Michael Kasigire was killed in the wee hours of Thursday morning at Manyangwa Village, Gayaza sub-county in Wakiso District.

According to relatives and close friends, Atulinda was running a garage in Manyangwa where one Brian Tuhamire (who is currently on the run) was employed.

It is further alleged that Tuhamire had reportedly made sexual advances to Atulinda which she rejected.

Arinaitwe Jackline, who happens to be the deceased’s sister says she received a phone call from Atulinda at 1:00 am on Thursday crying for help.

“Over the phone, I could hear my sister crying in a physical struggle,” Arinaitwe said, adding that moments later, the phone went off.

The family members rushed to Manyangwa on Thursday morning where they discovered Atulinda’s dead body with a pillow covering her face which she eventually died from as a result of suffocation.

Friends and relatives described Atulinda as a very jovial person who had a good heart and urged police to swing into action and have the suspected murderer apprehended.

SSP Kasigire urged the public to report any information that could lead to Tuhamire’s arrest to the nearest authorities. He described his departed sister as “friendly” and “social.”

Atulinda will be laid to rest on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at her ancestral home in Ruhunga, Bwizibwera in Kashari, Mbarara Municipality.

A Police Annual Crime Report released early this year details a total of 301 cases of murder as a result of domestic violence were reported to the Police in 2022 compared to 376 cases reported in 2021, giving a 19.9% decrease.
