Arsenal secured the 2023 Community Shield after beating Premier League and FA Cup holders Manchester City 4-1 in a penalty shoot-out at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
Guardiola’s men took the lead through a fine finish from Cole Palmer in the 77th minute after the forward cut inside from the right and curled a superb effort past Aaron Ramsdale and inside the far post.
However, with the clock ticking, Arsenal grabbed a stoppage-time equaliser after Leandro Trossard’s shot was deflected past Ortega by Manuel Akanji to send the match to a penalty shoot-out.
Kevin De Bruyne crashed his spot-kick against the crossbar and Ramsdale saved from Rodri before Fabio Vieira converted the winning penalty with Arsenal taking the shoot-out 4-1 to claim the first piece of silverware of the season.
Arsenal were confirmed City’s opponent in the Shield final after the latter defeated rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup final which meant the runners-up in the Premier League last season (Arsenal) were automatically poised to face the league champions in the season curtain raiser.
