Former security guard arrested for stealing gun from colleagues

ENTEBBE, (UG): The Police in Kampala Metropolitan South and Kajjansi Police Station have arrested one Okello Ben, a former private security guard over the robbery of an SAR gun from two colleagues and using it to terrorise residents in the area.

The alleged incident occurred last month on July 28, at around 8:30 pm when Okello robbed the gun from two private guards of TIME COP Security while at their guard point at Go Cult Sports Recreation Centre Neziba Cell, Seguku Parish, Ndejje division in Makindye Ssabagabo.

According to Police Spokesperson SCP Fred Enanga, Okello was three days later arrested from Chogam trading centre with the gun concealed in the Kanzu he was wearing.

“After 3 days, on the 31 07 2023, at around 9 pm, the suspect was arrested from Chogam trading centre and the gun which he had concealed in the Kanzu, he was wearing, recovered. In this very respect, he went to GO CULT sports recreation centre and tricked one of the guards, Ogwal Sam, with Ugx 1500, to go and buy chapatis. He used his absence to attack and hit Lugwe Okeng, with a stone to the head and robbed his gun,” Enanga explained.

Further investigations into the case revealed that the same suspect has a previous record of gun theft which occurred on May 13, from a private security guard at Forest Resort Hotel in Lwezza “A” zone, Mutungo parish, Ndejje division.

Enanga says for this incident, the gun was recovered on May 17, 2023, near the officer of TIME COP Security Company in Lubowa and the suspect was charged in court for stealing a firearm but released.

The suspect according to Enanga’s statement is scheduled to appear in court on two counts of stealing a firearm, illegal possession of a firearm and attempted murder.

“We strongly, believe the arrest of the suspect will bring some bit of relief to the community in Kajjansi and the surrounding areas,” he said.

He warned the public that illegal possession of firearms by notorious criminals poses a major threat to the community.
