UGANDA: Police in Karenga district in Northern Uganda have arrested a passenger with a bag containing over 145 bullets on Robolyn Bus that was coming from Kitgum heading to Kaabong district.

The passenger identified as Lucky Daniel Lokong was arrested on Wednesday, August 16, at Kapedo checkpoint in Kapedo sub-county, Karenga district.

According to Michael Longole, Mt Moroto regional police spokesperson, when security personnel searched the bus at the checkpoint, they found Lokong with a bag containing the bullets.

He says preliminary information indicates that the suspect moved with the ammunition from Karenga district to Lolelia sub-county in Kaabong with the intention of selling them to cattle rustlers.

IP Longole explains that security forces have been struggling to contain the influx of illegal firearms into the region due to the porous borderlines between Kenya and South Sudan.

This is the second time a security personnel at Kapedo checkpoint are intercepting ammunition, the last being in September 2022, when they arrested two men who had hidden a gun inside a bag of maize.

Longole revealed that they have strengthened vigilance at every security checkpoint to fight arms trafficking and other related transportation of illegal properties.

In 2022, the local leaders in the region tasked the government to investigate the supply of ammunition and security uniforms to the Karimojong cattle rustlers.
