UGANDA: A security guard attached to Centurion Security Company in Kabale is currently on the run after allegedly stealing Shs 12.5 million from a Pepsi Depot he was deployed to guard.
The suspect identified as one Joshua Akankwasa was guarding a depot belonging to Protos PMC Distributors Limited, in Kabale town, western Uganda when he turned into a robber and stole the amount from his duty station.
Preliminary information available alleged that the robbery happened at about 11 p.m. on the night of Tuesday, August 15, 2023, when the security guard was left behind at the depot for his night duty.
The case of theft and aggravated robbery was reported to the Police by one Christopher Mukama, the manager of the Depot on Wednesday morning.
Mukama told police that when he reported to work on Wednesday at around 7:45 am, he saw the behind the door of the depot open and Akankwasa missing.
He was however shocked when he entered and found the gun abandoned on the table and the money missing, and other valuables including a computer set.
The Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson Mr Elly Maate confirmed the incident and said a manhunt for Akankwasa was already underway to have him apprehended.
“On August 16, 2023, at around 1:18 a.m., Akankwasa, while armed with a gun, robbed Shs 12,577,400 and a computer set. An inquiry found the gun abandoned on an office table. The drawer was pulled open and cash was stolen, while a computer set was missing,” Maate told journalists on Thursday afternoon.
He explained that according to investigations at hand, Akankwasa could have connived with another gang to help him rob the depot.
Police recovered a gun reg.no. Ug-PSO-811448608634 and a case of aggravated robbery was reported at Kabale Police Station, Vide SD Ref: 26/16/08/2023.
