Kampala, (UG): President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has signed nine (9) bills into law, including the National Sports Act, 2023.
According to a statement by the Presidential Press Unit, H.E. Museveni signed the new bills exercising his Constitutional mandate prescribed in Article 91 (3) (a) of the Constitution of 1995 which grants him the powers to approve the Bills and turn them into Acts of Parliament.
The Acts, therefore, become the laws of Uganda with immediate effect.
Below is the list of nine bills signed by the President:
- The National Sports Act, 2023
- Stamp Duty (Amendment) Bill 2023
- Foreign Exchange (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2023
- Tax Procedures Code (Amendment) Bill 2023
- Excise duty (Amendment) (No.3) Bill, 2023
- Financial Institutions (Amendment) Bill 2023
- Income Tax (Amendment) 2023
- Value Added Tax (Amendment) Bill 2023
- Income Tax (Amendment) (No. 2) 2023
Speaking of the development, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon Anita Among thanked the President for accepting to assent to the bills which strengthens the parliament’s core functions and oversight in the country.
“I thank President Museveni, MPs, and the general public for their contributions in ensuring that Parliament discharges its core functions of oversight, legislation, and representation,” Among said.
Other bills that became laws this year 2023
On top of signing the Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2023 into law, President Yoweri Museveni, on May 29, 2023, assented to five other pieces of legislation passed by Parliament this year.
The Bills, which are now Acts of the Republic of Uganda, were, upon approval by Parliament, forwarded to the head of state for assent.
According to a press release issued by the State House, the Bills assented to by the President on May 29, 2023, are:
- Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2023
- The Markets Bill, 2023
- The Uganda Human Organ Donation and Transplant Bill, 2033 (Not Public Health Amendment Bill 2022, as had earlier been published)
- The Microfinance Deposit-Taking Institutions (Amendment) Bill, 2023
- The Museums and Monuments Bill, 2023
- The Law Reform (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill, 2023
