Tororo’s ‘rat eater’ politician arrested for slapping CAO in public

Morikatipe LC3 Chairperson, Gerald Omaset Obbo (NRM) is under custody at Tororo CPS over assault

Tororo, (UG): The Police in Tororo District are holding the LC III Chairman for Morukatipe sub-county, Mr Gerald Omaset Obbo on charges of assaulting the district Chief Administrative Officer, Mr Gabriel Atama, local news outlet EyemediaUganda reported on Friday.

According to the online outlet, the incident in which the LC3 boss caused fracas and slapped the CAO happened on Friday, August 25, 2023, in the eastern Uganda district.

It is alleged that the outrageous politician assaulted the CAO after the latter refused to transfer the current Sub-county chief of Morakatipe who is a Japadhola and replace him with an itesot.

Omaset, who became popular for eating a rat demanding a breakaway district from Tororo which basically is dominated by Itesots is currently detained at Toroto Central Police Station.

In fact time and again, the chairman has been saying it is taboo for a non-itesot to serve in his subcounty, something the district administration couldn’t allow, according to one official.

Tororo District Police Commander, Mr Ahmed Kimuli confirmed Omaset’s arrest, noting that it would set a bad precedent for the district to deploy staff based on tribe.

“He has a big problem. Last financial year that same chairman petitioned the minister of local government about his desire to transfer the subcounty chief but the district leaders informed the minister during the meeting about the impact and the status was maintained,” Kimuli said.

The DPC who presided over the arrest says Omaset was picked alongside Jacob Anyere, Sanloun Peso and Steven Owuma with whom he stormed the CAO’s office, armed with placards protesting the refusal by CAO to transfer their subcounty chief, Steven Magara.

On Wednesday, August 23, 2023, the subcounty chairperson first closed the office of the subcounty chief, demanding his transfer.

Police said they have now preferred charges of unlawful assembly and being a public nuisance against the subcounty chairperson and will be arraigned in court once investigations conclude.
