Mityana, (UG): The Uganda Prisons Service Friday confirmed that three prisoners were injured after a truck rammed into their bus on Thursday, August 31, 2023, in Mityana district.

The spokesperson of Prisons Service, Mr Frank Baine said the incident happened at 5:00 pm with the bus coming from court in Mityana.

“On Thursday, August 31, 2023, at about 5:00 pm, a Tata lorry registration number UAV 066x carrying logs rammed into a prison’s bus registration number UG 0344U on court duties with prisons on board forcing it off the road. The incident took place in Mityana Town,” Mr Baine said in a statement.

According to Baine, there were fortunately no fatalities except three prisoners who sustained minor injuries and are receiving treatment at Mityana Prison.

This is not the first time the prisoners have been involved in a crash.

In May last year, five inmates at Butuntumula Central Prisons facility died in a grisly road crash involving a Prisons truck and a saloon car in the Luwero district.

The crash occurred in Nalongo village, Luwero district involving a prison truck registration UG 0363U destined for Nakasongola and Toyota Wish registration number UBG 587W heading in the opposite direction.

The prison truck was transporting 54 inmates and 12 prison warders to undisclosed farms.

Police said preliminary information from eyewitnesses shows that the crash occurred after the Toyota Wish sustained a tyre burst and lost control before it rammed into the prison truck forcing it to overturn.
