Newly commissioned Paidha market to boost local revenue in Zombo

Paidha town council is projected to register an 18.3 per cent increment in revenue performance with over 280 million shillings in local revenue expected to be generated from the market against the previous 230 million shillings in 2022/23.

The 30 commissioned lockup shops at the market will annually generate local revenue to the tune of 72 million shillings.

During the commissioning, leaders appealed to the implementing partners European Union and the United Nations Capital Development Fund to fund the construction of the remaining dilapidated section of the market that improvises accommodation to the vendors. Worst still majority of vendors are exposed to weather vagaries.

Mr Innocent Onega, the LC 3 Chairperson of Paidha town council commended the DINU program, European Union and UNCDF for the 30 lockup shops that have improved local revenue generation and livelihood.

“The market and its associated activities are the highest contributor of local revenue to Paidha town council,” said Mr Onega.

The Robust buildings constructed by Wimpsi Uganda Limited at a cost of Ugx 342,616,900 million in the year 2022 are expected to last for over 50 years, while vigorously generating revenue for the council surpassing the current outstanding performance.

Mr. James Oyullu Oruna, LC5 Chairperson of Zombo district cast the rapid progression in revenue generation of Paidha town council.

“In F/Y 2022/23 performance of revenue from market alone was Ugx230 million, higher than it was in F/Y 2021/22; Ugx189 million and estimated to increase to Ugx286 million,” Oyullu remarked.

The DINU program has neared its end impacted to different service gaps and leaders pray for further timeline extension amidst assurances from the European Union and UNCDF to continue funding projects under support for agricultural, Revitalization and Transformation ( START) and Local Climate Adaptive livelihood facility (LOCAL).

Mr Dmitry Pozhidear, the Country Director, UNCDF pledged their development cooperation with Zombo district, saying; “We remain clung to our development cooperation with Zombo district and fight for delible results for people of Zombo.”

The European Union and United Nations Capital Development Fund will Irrespective of the absence or presence of DINU, implement START and LOCAL projects in the Zombo district.
