Kampala, (UG): The Police in Kampala are holding three boda boda riders in custody after they were arrested for leading an unlawful assembly which led to the blockage of multiple roads in Kampala on Tuesday afternoon.

Two of the suspects, identified as Komakech Stephen and Byamukama, are currently detained at Central Police Station Kampala, while the third suspect (whose particulars were not readily available by press time) is in custody at Jinja Road Police Station.

The report was confirmed by Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owiyesigyire in a police statement on Tuesday afternoon.

“The Territorial Police at Central Police Station and Jinja Road have launched investigations into an incident that transpired earlier today 12 September 2023 at approximately 9:00 AM in the Civil Parish of Kampala Central,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.

According to Owoyesigyire, the incident happened when a large group of unidentified Boda Boda riders, numbering over 100 in number unlawfully assembled and blocked off multiple roads, including Jinja Road, Kampala Road, Yusuf Luke Road, and Mukwano Road.

“Subsequently, they engaged in pelting stones towards traffic officers who were managing the junction near Jinja Road traffic lights,” Owoyesigyire explained, adding that in response to this situation, the police swiftly intervened, resulting in the arrest of three individuals at the scene.

Upon investigations, Owoyesigyire says the incident was linked to a fatal accident that occurred earlier around 8:50 AM along 8th Street in the Industrial Area, Kampala.

He says subsequent to this, the Police at Kabalagala Division are conducting a thorough investigation into the accident involving a motorcycle bearing registration UFP 327T, ridden by the victim, Mr Kimbowa Steven which was struck by an oncoming vehicle, a Hino with registration UBG 834 M, owned by Homelkin company.

“The Hino driver, identified as Atuhaire Emmy, initially left the scene but was subsequently apprehended by Kabalagala Police. Atuhaire Emmy has provided his statement regarding the events leading up to the accident.”

Mr Owoyesgyire explained that an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident and called upon all parties involved to remain calm during this process.

Meanwhile, the deceased boda boda rider, Mr Kimbowa Steven, has been transported to the City Mortuary for postmortem examination, and traffic flow in the affected areas has been normalized.
