Kiryandongo, (UG): The Kiryandongo District Local Government, together with the Ministry of Water and Environment have handed over sites for the construction of solar piped water systems and sanitation facilities in Mutunda, Gaspa and Nyakabaale rural growth centres.
The sites were handed over to Summit Projects Limited a company which was contracted at a sum of 13.7 billion shillings.
The projects according to the documents seen by this website are being funded by the Government of Uganda with support from the World Bank under the Integrated Water Management and Development Project and the construction is expected to be complete in the next 15 months.
Martin Jacan Gwokto the CAO Kiryandongo was pleased with the commencement of construction works and informed the community that the delay was caused by the assessment for compensation of the Project Affected Persons during land acquisition.
He added that the piped water system will help improve the District’s safe water coverage from the current 76% and also improve household incomes by reducing expenses on waterborne diseases.
Gwokto also called upon the contractor to deliver the project timely without compromising quality.
Ms Edith Aliguma Adyeri the District Chairperson decried the unstable water supply by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation which has made people resort to contaminated water sources like shadoofs in Bweyale Town Council.
She called upon the contractor to ensure that all public institutions such as schools and health facilities along the water lines are connected and supplied.
