Kayunga, (UG): The Police in Kayunga District are investigating circumstances under which two yet-to-be-identified men were killed by an angry mob suspecting them of stealing a motorcycle.
The duo were first beaten to death before the mob burnt one of their bodies in an incident that took place on Friday, September 15, at Namakandwa Village in Kangulumira Sub County, Kayunga District.
According to Kayunga District Police Commander, Ms Rosette Sikahwa, the duo allegedly stole a motorcycle from Buikwe District and went on the run until the angry mob pursuing them intercepted them in Kayunga as they tried to flee with their catch.
“Upon being nabbed, they beat them to death before burning one of the bodies. By the time police arrived at the scene, one of the bodies had been burnt beyond recognition,” Ms Sikahwa said.
The DPC could not verily identify the identity of the deceased duo but estimated them to be aged between 30 and 40 years.
However, relatives of the deceased who spoke to this publication claimed the deceased’s death was a case of mistaken identity. They say the registration number of the motorcycle the mob claimed had been stolen by the duo was slightly different from the one the deceased was riding on.
Ms Sikahwa said police were still tracing the whereabouts of the motorcycle which the deceased allegedly stole and details surrounding it were still scanty by press time.
Relatedly, the DPC said the police were investigating an incident in which a 19-year-old casual labourer at a construction site in Kaazi in Kayunga Sub County was found dead in his bed.
Andrew Muhirwe on Wednesday night went to sleep after watching football without complaining of any sickness only to be found in his bed dead.
Muhirwe’s body had been taken to Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem when this story was compiled.
