Singer Evelyn Lagu is dead

Singer Evelyn Nakabira 'Lagu' died Monday, September 18, after a long battle with kidney complications.

Ugandan musician and actress, Evelyn Nakabira alias Evelyn Love or Evelyn Lagu is dead.

Lagu, 41, was pronounced dead this morning (Monday, September 18) at her home in Nabugabo.

The “Ogumanga” hit maker has been battling heart and kidney complications for years.

The news of Evelyn love’s passing was confirmed by fellow artist and President of the Uganda National Musicians Association (UNMF), Edirisa Musuuza alias Eddy Kenzo in a post via X (formerly Twitter) on Monday morning.

“We took these pictures last Tuesday at the Jam Session and I can’t believe you are gone dear Evelyn Lagu” Kenzo said in a brief post.

“You have fought a big battle my sister and may your soul rest in eternal peace.”

Who is Evelyn Lagu?

Born Evelyn Nakabira, Lagu was born on June 1, 1982, in modern-day Kalungu district which was part of Masaka. She grew up with her aunt in Mityana district following the death of her parents.

She went to Aga Khan, Mityana SS, and Pride SS Mityana for her O’ Level education, and later St. Peter’s Busubizi for her A’ Level, which she finished in 1999.

Lagu started her music career as a back-up singer for some of the top artists including Carol Nakimera, Halima Namakula, Ragga Dee, and Mampi from Zambia. She has also played with the Mustard and Flash bands.

Some of her famed songs as a solo artist include among others Ogumanga, Ngukuwadde, Silkyatya, and Kasita Bakuleka.

At the time of her passing, Lagu was preparing a charity concert titled Evelyn Love Live in Charity concert at Papaz Spot in Makindye, a city suburb, on October 28, 2023.

Lagu also ventured in movie acting under a company known as Zubairi Family, where she was a member.

In June 2021, she traveled to Turkey for a kidney transplant, but the process couldn’t be done because of her health condition.

The doctors advised her to come back to Uganda to get medication and advised her to go back when her health improves, but it never changed.
