Kiruhura, (UG): The Police in Rwizi Region are holding in custody a 30-year-old Atuhaire Adson, the Deputy LC5 Chairperson of Kiruhura district on allegations of rape of a 20-year-old student of Bishop Stuart University (BSU).
According to preliminary police findings, it is alleged that the suspect and his victim met earlier this month in Mbarara City before exchanging contacts for further connection.
“..the suspect on the 8th of September, 2023 at around 2 pm, exchanged contacts with the victim, in Rwentondo, Kakoba ward, in Mbarara City, and after she gave them directions to Golden Leaf Bar,” said police spokesperson SCP Fred Enanga, adding that; the two were driving a Toyota Premio, registration number UAT 238Q.
Later that evening, Atuhaire is said to have called the victim and offered to take her out for an evening, where he eventually turned violent and raped her.
“He picked her up from the hostel at Kakoba Kyapatoni Cell and went and bought groceries and snacks. On their way back, the suspect took a different route and along the way, raped the victim,” Enanga explained, adding that after the incident, the victim reported the matter to police, and “the suspect was arrested. His motor vehicle was also impounded.”
Enanga said investigations into the case were already underway, and the suspect will be arraigned before courts of law to answer charges of rape among others.
Police has since warned the public, especially women to be extremely cautious when dealing with strangers, and avoid meeting them in non-public places where help can easily be sought.
“We would like to warn young women to be extra cautious, when moving out with strangers, especially when alone. The victim was particularly vulnerable when the suspect took a different direction and raped her,” Enanga advised.
