Gang leader of panga-wielding goons shot dead in Mbale

Mbale, (UG): Police officers attached to the force’s flying squad in Mbale City have shot and killed the suspected gang leader of the panga-wielding goons who have been attacking residents of Mbale and the metropolitan.

The suspect identified as Maboni Ibra alias Kadanke, 25, has reportedly been on wanted and others still at large, over a number of charges on different police files.

The deceased is alleged to have been at the peak of a series of aggravated robberies in Mbale and its surrounding areas and others still at large are on a wanted list of at least ten aggravated robbery cases at various police stations in the Elgon region.

Kadanke who was residing in Buyonjo cell, Nkoma ward, Northern division in Mbale City has been on and off in Mbale and was allegedly hiding within Soweto in Busia district according to Elgon regional police spokesperson SP Rogers Taitika.

“It’s alleged that he has been the leader of panga-wielding thugs attacking residents in various parts of Mbale and he formerly resided in Buyonjo cell, Nkoma ward in Mbale Northern division but he has been off and on while hiding in Soweto, Busia district,” SP Rogers Taitika said in a Friday statement.

The suspect’s shooting came when he was reportedly being pursued by the flying squad officers towards Tororo road while escaping on a motorcycle and he noticed the officers before jumping off the motorcycle and trying to disappear in the nearby bush. This prompted the officers to shoot him in the right thigh and he was later rushed to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

“He was sighted by an informant along Republic Street in Mbale city being transported on motorcycle registration number UFV 884F TVS red in colour and when they reached around Regional block in Uhuru cell, south-central ward in the industrial division, flying squad officers were tipped and they pursued him towards Tororo road.”

“He jumped off the motorcycle immediately after realizing that he was being pursued by a flying squad and ran into the nearby bush and this prompted the officers to release one bullet which touched Maboni’s right thigh and he was transported to Mbale regional referral hospital where he was pronounced dead on at about 1530hrs on Thursday, “SP Taitika said.

Police said Kadanke’s body was conveyed to Mbale city mortuary pending postmortem examination, the motorcycle was recovered and the boda boda rider was arrested and detained at CPS Mbale to help security in investigations.
