Jinja, (UG): The organising committee for the royal wedding of Kyabazinga William Gabula Nadiope IV and the new Inebantu-to-be Ms Jovia Mutesi has revealed that a total of Shs304m was raised at the launch of the wedding meetings in Jinja over the weekend.

“To kickstart the fundraising drive, members have raised Sh304m in cash,” Mr Patrick Batumbya, the chairperson of the organising committee told this public on Friday, adding that the two chiefdoms; Bugabula and Bunha, where the Kyabazinga and Inhebantu hail from respectively, are expected to raise the biggest contributions for the wedding.

The mega wedding will take place on November 18, at Bugembe Christ’s Cathedral in Jinja North City Division, and later on the same day, the Kyabazinga Gabula and his Queen, Ms Mutesia will treat guests to a wedding reception at the kingdom headquarters in Bugembe.

According to Mr Joseph Muvawala, the Katuukiro of the Kingdom, whereas Bugembe Cathedral can only accommodate 400 people, and the reception venue not exceeding 2,000 people, “mini venues in the district have been made as interventions.”

Muvawala was, however, noncommittal on the proposed budget, saying well-wishers are free to contribute to the wedding, especially the Basoga with the motive of showing the public that the Busoga Sub-region is not as poor as it is often misconceived.

The Third Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs; Ms Rebecca Kadaga who presided over the wedding launch function urged members to be extra cautious when collecting the funds for the wedding preparations so that there is no public backlash from givers with ill intentions.

“I request you (members of the organising committee) to be careful and avoid collecting money from people who will say the wedding wouldn’t have taken place if their contribution was not made,’’ Ms Kadaga, before urging the organisers to ensure that the Kyabazinga’s wedding becomes the “wedding of the century”.
