Goli custom border point connected to WENRECO power grid

Nebbi, (UG): The magnificent Goli One-stop border point along the Uganda-DR Congo boundary in Nebbi District has been connected to the West Nile Rural Electrification Company (WENRECO) Electricity Network, DailyExpress understands.

The connection was made possible with the execution of project commissioning on September 29, 2023, at a function which was graced by officials from URA, WENRECO, community leaders and residents of Goli.

The multi-million government structure habited by Uganda Revenue Authority and its agencies at Goli customs station, for a long time, has been using thermal and solar energy to address its demand for stable power, which is a necessity for the functionality of the customs station.

Prior to the commissioning of the now extended and restored MV Electricity line transmitting electrical energy to the customs station and Boma East village, DailyExpress learnt that the MV line had been vandalized in a fire accident that ravaged a truck some time back at the border station and since then plans were underway to restore the damaged line.

It was only the unbearable demand for stable power supply that convinced the management of Uganda Revenue Authority in 2022, to square about 160 million shillings and extend 315 KVA(transformer) power stretching on about 1.5km strings to the customs border point and restore connections of communities especially Boma east village and Goli trading centre.

This publication was abreast of the shouting star optimism exhibited by URA, WENRECO and the local communities of Goli about the lighting up of the area.

Eng. Nathan Woniala, an Electrical Engineer at URA registered his votes of thanks to the management of the revenue collecting body for funding the project saying in verbatim; “The power that has come to this area is going to be more stable as compared to other areas of West Nile, as URA we can not withstand having power off for a day.”

DailyExpress was also made aware of the costless offer of refurbishing the previously damaged transformer in Goli Trading Centre.

Ms. Judith Wangoic, a Communications Officer at WENRECO applauded the residents of Boma East Village for embracing development saying; “…as we talk right now, the custom is having power, the community of Boma East is in position to see lights and we encourage them to apply and get connected.”

Mr Ogenmungu Dominic Sunday, the LC3 Chairperson of Jupangira Subcounty in Nebbi District echoed the different employment opportunities that have come with the connection and extension to benefit the locals.

“Some many opportunities will come up in Boma East Village, several industries will come up especially cottage industries, welding and so on that will create several employment opportunities,’ Ogenmungu exclaimed in amazement.

Goli One Stop Border point handles most clearing and forwarding exercises of transit goods destined for the Democratic Republic of Congo via the Nebbi District, generating large sums of revenue for the government of Uganda through the various duties levied on goods and services.
