Rev Can Suubi elected first Bishop of East Busoga Diocese

Kampala, (UG): The Church of Uganda Wednesday announced the election of Rev Canon Paul Hannington Suubi as the first bishop of the new East Busoga Diocese.

Suubi’s election was confirmed by the House of Bishops sitting at the Provincial Secretariat at Namirembe in Kampala on October 04, 2023.

Following his election, the CoU acting provincial secretary, Mr Balaam Muheebwa also announced the date of consecration and enthronement all of which is set for next month on November 19.

“The House of Bishops sitting at the Provincial Secretariat at Namirembe today has elected Rev Canon Paul Hannington Suubi as the first Bishop of East Busoga Diocese. He will be consecrated and Enthroned on 19th Nov.2023,” the CoU posted via X, formerly known as Twitter.

According to the Provincial statement, the consecration and enthronement will be held at St. Stephen’s Church Of Uganda in Bugiri, eastern Uganda.

Who is Bishop-elect Suubi?

The new Busoga East Diocese Bishop-elect, Rev Can Paul Suubi and his wife Dr Margaret Stella Suubi have three children together.

Suubi was ordained a deacon in August 1993 and ordained a priest four years later (1997).

He holds a Diploma in Education and a Bachelor’s degree in Divinity.

Currently, Rev Suubi serves as Assistant Vicar at St Andrew’s Church of Uganda in Jinja District.

“His ministry has been mainly in schools, where he served as the longest chaplain at Busoga College, Mwiri,” Mr Muheebwa said describing the bishop-elect.

“He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour in 1994 when he realized that he could not walk alone but rather in Jesus Christ, inspired by St. Paul in Galatians 2:20: I have been crucified with Jesus Christ, it is no longer I who lives but Christ who lives in me and the life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
