Bulambuli, (UG): Police in Bulambuli District are on a manhunt for an 18-year-old son who allegedly stabbed his father to death over what is presumed to be a land conflict.
The suspect (still at large) has been identified as Wafhakale Brian, 18, a resident of Tobongoni village, Luswaswa parish, Namisuni sub-county in Bulambuli district.
According to Elgon Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Rogers Taitika, the suspect reportedly used a sharp panga to cut the neck back and legs of his father identified as Waleda Milton, 52, a resident of Kibanda B village, Kibanda parish, Sisiyi sub-county in Bulambuli district.
“It is alleged that Waleda (now deceased) had a coffee garden and gave part of it to his son and that he had gone to pick coffee and it started raining. Given the nearness of his son’s house to the garden, the father decided to take shelter at the son’s residence but upon returning home, Wafhakale entered his house and picked the panga before stabbing his father several times,” SP Taitika said in a police statement.
He added; “Waleda had a garden of coffee which he gave part of it to his son Wafhakale Brian. At 9 am, Waleda together with his wife Ms. Nabudua went to their part of the garden to pick coffee but it started raining and the couple took shelter on the veranda of Wafhakale’s house which was near the garden.”
Further investigations have established that the son (Wafhakale) was not happy with his father dividing the said piece of land which annoyed him when his father went to pick coffee from the piece of land he reserved for himself.
“Upon returning home and finding the couple on the veranda, Wafhakale entered the house, picked a panga and cut his biological father Waleda Milton on the neck back and legs accusing him of picking coffee from the portion of land the father refused to give him.”
SP Taitika says the victim was rushed to the nearby clinic and later transferred to Muyembe Health Centre IV in Bulambuli District where he was pronounced dead at around 2 pm on Friday afternoon.
Police have strongly condemned the act of killing a parent for land citing that the Uganda laws don’t state anywhere that it is compulsory for a child to get a portion of land from his parents but instead, they do it on personal grounds and decisions.
“We strongly condemn this act and it’s too sad and it’s not written anywhere in our laws that your parents must give you a piece of land but it’s upon their decision, and when they fail to give you, they commit no offence. We have established in our preliminary investigations that Wafhakale Brian wanted to use the whole land including what his parents were using,” SP Taitika added.
He advised children to always convince their parents in a rightful manner to get portions of land instead of being involved in criminal behaviours. He says the suspect is being traced to be apprehended and prosecuted.
