Iganga, (UG): The Iganga Municipal Council have received at least 250m shillings to grade and gravel roads in the eastern municipality of Iganga district.
The amount received is part of the Road Development Fund of one billion from the government of Uganda which was earlier approved by parliament and this money was allocated to graveling roads worth 32 kilometers across the town.
The sh1billion fund was given to every district, city and municipality in the country.
While officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony to commence the road works on Tuesday, the town clerk of Iganga Municipal Council, Mr. Kasala Daniel says they received 250m in the first quarter as part of the one billion and that they target to work on 11 roads murram roads within the municipality.
“The state of roads in the municipality will improve because government has given us 1b shillings and so far in the first quarter we received 250m and we’re starting on a number of roads. We expect to work on at least 11 roads in the two divisions of central and northern. We shall do 17km in one division and 15km in the other,” Mr. Kasala said.
The Municipal Civil Engineer, Mr. Lyada Phillip says they received guidelines from the ministry of works and parliament to embark on graveling roads and that they target to have 5.4 metre roads in width with at least 100mm gravel thickness on addition to installing culverts and constructing drainages.
“We shall have heavy grading and put gravel of thickness 100mm, then install culverts as well as constructing drainages along the roads. We shall also have swamp filling because we’re interested in connecting the municipality to the neighbouring sub counties,” Mr Lyada said.
DailyExpress has established that Bwongo road in Mutamba, Mutukula ward, Iganga Northern division where they made the groundbreaking from, penetrates part of the land belonging to Hill Water factory. We have however learnt about plans by the municipal officials engage the owner and have the road connected.
“We’re going to speak to him and I’m sure he will listen to us given the fact that he’s a born of this area. We shall engage him on the value of this road,” said Hajj Walubi Abubakar, the NRM chairperson in Iganga, before calling upon all leaders in the whole district to unite for development.
Hajj Walubi says Iganga may lose some projects due to disunity amongst leaders.
The groundbreaking ceremony where the deputy RDC Iganga Mr Mwanje Eddy was the chief guest, attracted among others, the area MP Hon Mugema Peter alias Panadol, chairperson Iganga district Mr Gabula Ezera, mayor Iganga municipal council Mr Bamu Lulenzi, district speaker Mr. Mpungu Benard, councillors, division chairpersons and district engineers.
Meanwhile, Hon Mugema assured his constituents that the project will help all people before calling upon people to avoid politicizing it. He says the 15km which were promised by ministry of works will be achieved, calling upon people to be patient.
The area legislator assured people of Iganga that the municipality is being included on USMID and that it’s on lot four which will be operational starting May next year.
