Kampala, (UG): The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Annet Anita Among has accepted the appointment of Hon Yusuf Nsibambi to replace Hon Ibrahim Ssemujju as the new party whip of the Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

The development comes exactly two months after Ssemujju (Kira Municipality) was fired by the FDC Secretary General, Nathan Nandala Mafabi and replaced him with Nsibambi (Mawokota South). The reasons for Ssemujju’s sacking remained undisclosed till date although inside party sources affirm the dismissal was a part of the ongoing party wrangles.

During a plenary held on Wednesday, October 10, 2023 at the parliamentary chambers in Kampala, Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa revealed to the house that his boss, Ms Among had indicated in the letter he read an acceptance and endorsement of the change in FDC leadership.

“The Secretary General has vide his letter on October 7, 2023 written to me communicating, confirming the decision of the FDC delegates’ conference appointing Yusuf Nsibambi as FDC Party Whip in Parliament. In the circumstances therefore, I do accept the designation of Nsibambi as FDC Party Whip,” read in part the letter authored and signed off by Speaker Among.

In his acceptance speech, Hon Nsibambi pledged to work with all members to address issues that affect society.

“I take this appointment from my party as a very big challenge. You can tell and see what is going on, so, it is my duty to galvanize the Party and also bring some sense of decency in the debates we are making in Parliament as FDC,” Hon Nsibambi said on the floor of the House.

“I promise to work with all members and my whipping isn’t like I am a supervisor but I will try to ensure that we have common positions, meet or address issues that affect society than playing to the gallery,” he added.
