Man, 23, burns 50-year-old woman to ashes after raping, stealing from her

Omoro, (UG): The Territorial Police in Aswa West River Region have in custody a 23-year-old suspect identified as Opiyo Ivan Lanyet for the alleged rape and murder of Abong Veronica, a 50-year-old female peasant of Kiteng village in Omoro District, northern Uganda.

The incident according to Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga happened at the beginning of this month on October, 01, 2023at around 3 am in the night.

It is alleged that the suspect who was returning from a funeral rite on the fateful day, first went to the home of Latigi Alice and stole a hen and its eggs, and proceeded to the home of the second victim where he committed the atrocious act.

“He broke the door open and raped the victim, then strangled her to death. After the murder, he stole her clothes and set the house on fire, thus burning the dead body beyond recognition,” Mr Enanga revealed on Thursday evening, adding that the suspect was trailed and arrested by the locals, and later handed over to police.

Enanga condemned the ever-increasing acts of sexual assault and violence on female adults especially the elderly and called for community sensitisation to help curb the vice.
