Rakai, (UG): The Territorial Police in Greater Masaka Region has in custody, two male suspects arrested on charges related to alleged assault and murder of a 75-year-old woman in Rakai District, central Uganda.
The duo identified as Kakooza Kerekensiyo and Suuna Silver are alleged to have murdered Nakaweesi Maria, a 75-year-old, peasant of Nabugando village, Kitaasa parish in an incident recorded on October 07, 2023, at around 2 pm.
According to preliminary information obtained by police, it is alleged that the victim was on 4th October at around 10 pm allegedly assaulted by Kakooza, her concubine.
“The following day, the sandals of her second concubine, Suuna were seen at her home. She, however, concealed what happened during the night. Unfortunately, her condition worsened and she died at her home as her son, Kimbugwe Yudah, was preparing to take her to hospital on 7th October 2023,” Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga said in a statement.
According to the 2022 Police Crime Report, the number of crimes committed in the country increased dramatically in 2022 in comparison to the previous year (2021).
The police report indicated that the number of offences grew by more than 18% in one year compared to the previous one.
“A total of 231,653 cases were reported in 2022, up from 1960–81 in 2021. Thefts increased by 41% to 61508 from 43583 in 2021, while assaults increased by 9% from 29317 to 32041,” the report revealed.
