Kapchorwa, (UG): The Territorial Police in Sipi Region and Kapchorwa District are holding a 43-year-old woman over the murder of her husband whom he accused of stealing her cash savings and failing to return it.

The suspect identified as Juliet Chelangat, 43, a peasant of Waror village, Tegeres sub-county is alleged to have assaulted her husband identified as Namawangala Stephen, aged 40, in an incident recorded earlier this month in Kapchorwa district.

According to preliminary police investigations, it is alleged that the suspect, on October 4, 2023, had withdrawn her cash savings worth Shs 200,000 from the Kabati village savings group, to pay school fees for their children.

However, her husband reportedly removed the money from where she had kept it on October 8, 2023, and spent it all on alcohol. When quizzed on the whereabouts of the money, the husband promised to pay it back on October 9, 2023 but failed.

“At around 11 pm that day, they developed a quarrel, which led to a fight, where the suspect pushed her husband to the ground and became unconscious. He died while being rushed to Kapchorwa Hospital,” Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga revealed on Monday afternoon.

He added that the suspect was subsequently arrested and detained in custody as investigations into the case for murder continue.

In a separate development, a joint-security force of Police and UPDF in Nabilatuk district are actively searching for an L/CPL Ruhuriza Michael of Lopetageit detach, under the 49 Batallion, for the alleged murder by shooting of his wife over theft of his cash Shs 150,000.

The victim was identified as Irama Mercy, a 20-year-old, female victim, whom he was cohabiting with, for the last 5 months.

According to Mr Enanga, it is alleged that the shs 150k was part of the officer’s loan, obtained from the Wazalendo SACCO.

“The OC detach had prevailed over the family, following repeated complaints of theft of money, but all in vain. On the fateful day, the suspect returned from the bar at around 10 pm, picked up his gun and shot dead the victim,” Enanga stated.

He added that the officer reportedly abandoned the gun with 109 bullets at a distance of about 120 metres as he fled.

” 9 bullet shells were recovered from the scene. The UPDF got in touch with the victim’s relatives for burial arrangements,” he added.

According to Mr Enanga, the two incidents show the dangers in homes, where there is no respect and/or mutual understanding.

“We continue to advise Spouses or Partners in toxic relationships to seek help from the Child and Family Protection Unit before it is too late and life-threatening,” he stated.
