Kasese, (UG): The Territorial Police in Rwenzori East and Kasese District are holding two suspects in custody on charges related to the alleged kidnap and trafficking in persons.
The suspects are; Muhindo Shafik, a 21-year-old supervisor at Kassanda Sugar Company and resident of Nyarukongu village and Masereka Bernard a 19-year-old boda boda rider of Munango village.
According to Police Spokesperson, SCP Fred Enanga, it is alleged that on the 26th of September 2023, at around 10 am, Masereka, the boda boda rider picked up Mumbere Ferguson from Kasese taxi park and caused his disappearance.
“Upon arrest, he indicated that he was hired by Muhindo Shafic, to recruit teenagers and young adults, aged 14-18, to work as casual labourers in a sugar factory in Kassanda district,” Enanga stated while addressing the media on Monday at Naguru police headquarters.
However, Mr Enanga revealed that Muhindo was arrested earlier this month on October 10 2023 from Kilembe in Kasese where he had gone to recruit more children.
“He indicated that he had so far recruited 24 children, under the instructions of Emma, a manager at Kasanda sugar factory. And that Emma, hires vehicles from Kasese to transport the children to Kasanda sugar factory, where the driver is paid on arrival” explained Mr Enanga.
