Iganga, (UG): The government of Uganda through the Ministry of Works has responded to the request by the people of Iganga in Kigulu North Constituency to rehabilitate the 16km road which has taken years in a poor and dilapidated state.

The road which stretches in three sub-counties of Nabitende, Namungalwe and Nawandala in Iganga District serves people in the villages of Kabira, Bukubandulu, Bugono, Nawangaiza, Nsinze, Kiwani, and Nawankware, among others. It stretches to the Lumbuye swamp which separates Iganga from Luuka district.

While launching the road rehabilitation and maintenance at Bukubandulu village, Bugono parish in Nabitende sub-county on Saturday, the woman member of parliament for Iganga district Hon Kauma Sauda Alibaawo commended the people for their patience saying the areas are now fully connected to the town of Iganga and other neighbouring areas.

“We have launched our 16km road and as I promised you during the campaign I will push your voice to have your area connected to other areas. I want to thank the government led by President Museveni for putting this in action and I also thank the leadership of this area who have worked collectively with me,” Hon Alibaawo said before calling upon locals to cooperate with the engineering team.

Given the improved road network, MP Alibaawo urged youths to use the road and embrace business and other economic activities which will positively change their lives.

She also rallied mothers to seek medical attention in health centres during pregnancy and also ensure giving birth in health facilities.

Locals speak out

Ms Mutesi Fatuma of Bukubandulu village, Bugono parish in Nabitende sub county told DailyExpress that mothers in labour pain have been experiencing hardship in accessing health facilities to the extent of giving birth along the poor way.

“We have been facing a problem during our labour periods when even a motorcycle can’t reach where you’re. I personally one time gave birth along the way as I was heading to the health facility to deliver, so this has been a serious concern and we want to appreciate our government through our leaders led by the woman MP,” Ms Mutesi said.

Mr. Libba Richard Eriya, a boda boda cyclist in Bugono B said, “This road has been burdening us since passengers could give us little money for a long distance. We had to spend most of the money repairing and maintaining our motorcycles given the poor state in which the road has been.”

A number of people who practice agriculture and other activities like bricklaying said they were making losses as a brick could go for less than shs100 each given the poor road network. School children also narrated their ordeal of footing where they couldn’t reach schools in shoes but resorted to carrying them in their hands.

The LC3 Chairperson Nabitende sub-county, Mr Basoga Moses Musekwa commended the government and Hon Kauma Sauda Alibaawo for responding to their call by routinely reporting their concern to the Ministry of Works and Transport for action. He says they were facing a number of challenges as a result of the dilapidated road.

“I want to thank the government of Uganda and our area woman MP Hon Alibaawo for remembering the people of Bukubandulu and other areas along this road. I was always disturbing her on this very issue but we thank God that the challenges are now history, it has been the poorest road in the district,” Mr Basoga said before appreciating locals for their total cooperation with the engineering team on the ground.
