FUFA DRUM 2023: Teso, Lango take first-leg advantage in quarterfinals

The 2023 FUFA Drum quarter-final first leg on Saturday brought exhilarating action to football fans across Uganda, with two thrilling encounters gracing the pitch.

At Soroti Stadium, in Soroti City, Teso Province showcased their prowess, securing a narrow 2-1 victory over Kigezi Province.

The visitors struck first in the 34th minute, courtesy of Dickson Niwamanya, setting the tone for an intense battle. The home side, however, refused to be outdone.

Police FC’s Isaac “Falcao” Ogwang, now the tournament’s leading scorer, emerged as the hero for Teso Province.

Ogwang delivered a double strike in the 55th and 79th minutes, clinching the first-leg advantage.

Fans eagerly anticipate the rematch on Sunday, 12th November, at Kihihi Primary Ground in Kanungu.

Meanwhile, at Boma Grounds in Kitgum, the Northern Derby lived up to its billing. Acholi Province faced off against last edition’s finalists, Lango Province, in a match of high anticipation.

The home side dominated the first half, launching numerous attacks, but failed to find the net.

Acholi Province Starting XI

The deadlock was finally broken in the 68th minute, when Bul FC’s Emmanuel Obua unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box, leaving Acholi custodian Derrick Ochan helpless.

Starboy Denis Omedi added to the tally with a stunning long-range effort seven minutes later, securing a 2-0 lead for Lango.

With this result, Lango gains the upper hand and sets their sights on a spot in the semi-finals.

The return leg is set to take place at Akii Bua Stadium in Lira on Saturday, 18th November 2023.

Both matches saw outstanding performances, with Isaac Ogwang of Teso Province and Emmanuel Obua of Lango Province earning the coveted title of Man of the Match for their exceptional contributions.

The Quarter-final first-leg action continued on Sunday with two games, as defending champions West Nile hosted the first edition champions Buganda at Luo Ground, Nebbi, while Busoga welcomed Tooro Province at Kamuli Play Ground.
