Taxi driver on the run after knocking three people dead

Namisindwa, (UG): Police in Namisindwa District, eastern Uganda are on a manhunt for a taxi driver who knocked three people dead in a road crash on Sunday evening.

The nasty road crash involved a Toyota Hiace commonly known as taxi registration number UAZ 395L, white in colour and a TVS motorcycle registration number KMDB 061K

Elgon Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Rogers Taitika who confirmed the incident said the crash occurred in the evening hours at around 6:40pm in Bubutu trading centre along Butiru – Lwakhakha highway.

“The crash involved a motor vehicle UAZ 395L Toyota hiace, white in colour and a TVS motorcycle registration number KMDB 061K. The deceased ridder and two passengers on the motorcycle are yet to be identified,” SP Rogers Taitika said.

He identified the deceased persons as Wabomba Ronald (the ridder), 37, a resident of Bunanyama cell, Bukemo ward, Katabazi Julius, 37, and Nasya Beatrice, 45, both residents of Nabutiti cell, Lwakhakha ward, Lwakhakha town council in Namisindwa district.

SP Taitika attributed the crash to reckless driving as the taxi heading to Mbale had a head-on collision with the motorcycle which was moving in the opposite direction.

“It’s alleged that motor vehicle UAZ 395L Toyota Hiace PSV was heading to Mbale direction and the motorcycle KMDB 061K TVS was from Mbale direction heading to Lwakhakha and had a head-on collision. A ridder and two passengers on the motorcycle died on the spot.”

Meanwhile, Taitika said police were able to respond swiftly at the accident scene and towed both the motorcycle and the motor vehicle to Lwakhakha station for parking, pending inspection by the Inspector Of Vehicles (IOV).

The three dead bodies were delivered to Mbale city mortuary pending postmortem examination as investigations into the actual cause of the crash continue.
