Police officer arrested over shs1.1bn robbery on Kampala-Masaka highway

Kampala, (UG): Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP Kakana James, the Officer in Charge of Namayingo Police Station is in hot soup after he was arrested over his alleged involvement in a robbery incident which saw victims lose over shs 117 million ($317,900) at Nakirebe along the Kampala-Masaka highway.

The alleged robbery is reported to have happened on September 19, 2023, when a group of five men intercepted a taxi and robbed the passenger on the busy highway.

“One of the thugs was clad in a Police uniform with the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police armed with a pistol and another was in the army. The rest were in civilian clothing and travelling in a Super custom whose number plates were concealed with MK army stickers during the time of the robbery,” a victim of the incident recounts.

Following the incident, the Chief Political Commissar at Uganda Police, Senior Commissioner of Police – SCP Hadijah Namutebi with the help of the CCTV footage viewed at Be Energy Petrol Station, and thorough intelligence, arrested four (04) suspects to help with the investigations.

The quartet included; Lubega Moses, Nuwagaba Josephat alias Jose, Kyomuhendo Richard aka Ricky and ASP Kakana James (now former OC Station Namayingo).

“Their homes and residences were searched for possible evidence. The suspects were interviewed and their statements were recorded where they admitted participating in the robbery and mentioned their associates,” a source within police and knowledgeable with the ongoing investigations told this website.

“Exhibits recovered; motor Vehicle Reg No. UAW 187W Super Custom used during the robbery was tracked, recovered and recorded,” the source adds.

Furthermore, a Subaru motor vehicle, of Reg No. UBN 291A, proceeds of the robbed money cash of $10,700 and Ugx 591,000 were recovered from Nuwagaba Josephat aka Jose.

Household items like Sofa set chairs, TV sets, cooking Utensils, and other assorted properties were recovered from the home of Lubega Moses all as proceeds of the robbed money.

“We condemn in the strongest terms where a person entrusted to protect lives and property of Ugandans and people in Uganda turns against them to participate in such a manner. It is an individual capacity and doesn’t in any way represent the police,” Namutebi said.

This publication understands that on October 16, 2023, hell broke loose when ASP Kakana James OC was arrested from Nansana – Wakiso District after escaping arrest from his Station in Namayingo.

The suspects appeared before the grade 1 Magistrate at Mpigi court over aggravated robbery charges last Friday, November 17, 2023.

She noted that police will follow up the matter until the suspects get the deserved punishments.

In another robbery matter, a  Chinese investor identified as  Hei Wei was robbed of US dollars 190,000 ( 690 million) by a group of thugs using Bodaboda along Sezibwa road near Fang Fang Hotel.

The victim had used Boda Boda from his residence in Kololo and it’s suspected the same rider was on surveillance.

Police managed to arrest one suspect from Kisenyi, and upon searching his home, they recovered 3700 US dollars and Uganda shillings 1,000,000.

The hunt for accomplices is still ongoing.
