Kampala, (UG): The former Minister of State for ICT, George William Nyombi Thembo has been appointed the new Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC).
Nyombi, 59, was confirmed in the position by the current Minister of ICT and National Guidance Minister, Dr Chris Baryomunsi, assigning him the mandate to lead the national communications regulator for the next five years.
He is set to take over from Eng Irene Kaggwa Ssewankambo who has steered the commission for three years as the acting ED since replacing Eng Godfrey Mutabazi in February 2020
Nyombi joined UCC in 2016 after dropping out of parliament and cabinet and has since then been the director in charge of Uganda Communications Universal Services Access Fund (UCUSAF), previously called Rural Communications Development Fund (RCDF).
He was one of the final our candidates from a pool of about 70 Ugandans who applied for the job of UCC ED when it was advertised two months ago.
Among the notable persons to apply for the position included; the incumbent ED, Eng. Irene Kaggwa, who now retains her position of Director for Engineering and Communication Infrastructure; Fred Otunnu, the Director of Corporate Affairs at UCC; and Ms Julianne Mweheire, Director of Industry Affairs and Content Development at the same commission.
