Senior police commander charged with attempted murder

Kampala, (UG): A senior Police officer at the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) has been charged with attempted murder along with two other civilians, this publication understands.

ASP Julius Gwaivu who is attached to Katwe Police Station was been arraigned in the Jinja Chief Magistrates Court together with Joseph Kakumba and Fauzia Nandudu for reportedly carrying out an unlawful operation in Jinja where they shot and severely injured Jinja businessman Herman Tabingwa.

Prosecution contends that on November 25, 2023, the trio under unclear circumstances carried out an illegal operation in Jinja where they shot and severely injured the businessman at Harakaraka Garage in Jinja City.

The trio appeared before Jinja Chief Magistrate Fiona Angura where they where seven counts including attempted murder, conspiracy to commit a felony, unlawful confinement, wrongful use of a firearm, failure to keep safe custody of firearm, failure to keep custody of ammunition and conspiracy to commit a misdemeanour were read for them.

They however denied the charges.

The trial magistrate subsequently granted them a cash bail of shs500,000 each and  shs10 million not cash for each of their sureties.

The case was adjourned to December, 11, 2023 for mention of the charges.
