Prime suspect behind child trafficking in Mukono, Kampala netted in Makerere

Kampala, (UG): Police in Kampala have arrested one Ibra Kaweesa, a prime suspect behind a child trafficking scheme which had become notorious for trafficking underage children in Mukono and Kampala districts.

Kaweesa was arrested following the incident in Ntawo village in Mukono, where unsuspecting parents, enticed by the soccer tournament ruse, registered their children, unknowingly offering them to Kaweesa. Luck was on the side of one vigilant parent who grew suspicious and hesitated to hand over their child.

According to Police spokesperson Fred Enanga, the alleged perpetrator had deceived the parents to give him the children who were to participate in a soccer tournament in Namasuba but turned out to be a fake tourney.

Enanga who was addressing journalists in Kampala on Monday said the cautious parent took quick action, capturing pictures and recording a video of Kaweesa. The concerned parent promptly posted the evidence online, triggering a swift response from the police.

“Law enforcement authorities tracked down Kaweesa, apprehending him from Makerere. He is now in custody, facing charges related to the theft of mobile phones and the trafficking of persons,” Enanga said.

“The arrest sheds light on the importance of vigilance and the role of technology in exposing and combating criminal activities,” he added.
