Five detainees escape death in Mutungo Police fire

Kampala, (UG): At least five detainees narrowly escaped death in a fire outbreak that left several case files burnt down to ashes at Mutungo Police Station in Nakawa Division on Friday morning.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Mr Luke Owoyesigyire, the 6 am fire whose cause is still unknown started out from the Office of the station Officer Incharge (OC) and spread to other parts of the building.

“The incident began at approximately 6 am, and our investigative team is committed to providing updates, as more details emerge,” Mr Owoyesigyire stated.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the fire incident originated from in the office of the Officer incharge and subsequently spread to other parts of the building.

According to Mr Owoyesigyire, no lives were injured or lost because the police responded quickly to stop the fire. He said several property was lost in the fire outbreak

“Three SMG riffles and ammunition were lost as the fire and ammunition as the fire reached the armoury,” he said.

He added that the police station’s diary books stored in the office were also destroyed in the fire

“It is noteworthy that officers on duty managed to rescue the five detained suspects and the essential office property such as radio calls and case files were salvaged from the blaze.”

The KMP deputy spokesperson assured that measures were being taken to address the aftermath of this unfortunate incident.
