Kampala, (UG): Ugandan female chef Dorcus Bashema Kirabo, alias Mama D who has been cooking since December 23 has now broken the Guinness World Record of 119 hours, 57 minutes and 16 seconds for the longest solo cooking session.
The previous record was set by Irish chef Alan Fisher in Matsue, Shimane, Japan, cooking for 5 days from September 28 to October 3, 2023. Fisher had ousted, Nigerian chef Hilda Baci, the previous record holder who had seized the crown in June of this year.
However, Mama D, renowned for her culinary prowess and innovative dishes in Kampala is now set to set her own record as she continues to cook continuously without a break after passing the current record.
Mama D’s endeavour not only showcases her exceptional cooking skills but also serves as a testament to her determination and passion for the culinary arts.
She started her challenge on December 23, 2023, in Kira, Wakiso district at 10:00 am and has set her target to mark 121-plus hours to break the current Cookathon record.
Many people have gathered at Mama D’s home in Kira, Wakiso district, outside the capital Kampala, waiting to cheer her feat (and take selfies) if she pulls it off.
By 8:00 am yesterday (December 26), she had clocked 61 hours. “66 hours, 52 minutes and counting,” she tweeted on Boxing Day after recording her 77th meal.
“It is the people like you that keep us going,” she told a group of people who visited her kitchen, adding, “We will not give up till Friday.”
Mama D continues to express her enthusiasm and extends an open invitation to the community, saying, “Whoever can eat and cheer me on, please come through. It boosts my spirits and mood.”
Achieving the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon undoubtedly places Chef Dorcus Kirabo Bashebah among the elite ranks of culinary trailblazers.
