Iganga, (UG): The Deputy Secretary for mobilization for the National Unity Platform (NUP) in Eastern Uganda, Hon. Andrew Kiiza Kaluya has refuted information going around in Busoga that they were forsaken in the recently selected shadow cabinet of the opposition in the parliament of Uganda.

The cabinet selected weeks ago saw some members of the party shift from their responsibilities to other offices and according to Hon Kaluya, many members of NUP in Busoga are serving in good positions citing that the only MP who was sent to parliament on an NUP ticket from Busoga has an office despite dropping her as the deputy opposition chief whip.

The former member of parliament for Kigulu South in Iganga district was on Friday speaking to journalists at Iganga news bureau responding to concerns from the public and he said Busoga NUP members are diligently serving the party in various positions and that the only NUP MP Hon. Manjeri Kyebakutika(Woman MP for Jinja city) is serving as the shadow trade minister.

“….55 MPs are from the central region and we only have Hon JB Nambeshe and Hon Kyebakutika in the whole eastern region who are serving at the national level. Where is another MP on the NUP ticket from Eastern? Those existing are serving like former whip Hon Kyebakutika who’s now the trade minister, and Hon Nambeshe is now the opposition whip. Which positions do you need when you didn’t send NUP MPs to parliament? ” Hon Kaluya questioned.

Kaluya reminded the people in Busoga who pin the party for selecting a number of cabinet members from the central region that Busoga has got the deputy spokesperson NUP Mr. Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, head of ideology and training Pr. Andrew Muwanguzi, head electoral commission in NUP Ms Mercy Walukamba, the Trade minister Hon Manjeri and himself.

He therefore urged people to send more NUP MPs to parliament and that they are aiming at presenting a NUP candidate in every village in the forthcoming LC1 elections.

Mr Kaluya further commended the former leader of the opposition in parliament Hon Mathias Mpuuga saying they have trust in their people to serve better and he welcomed the new leader of opposition and the party spokesperson Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi.

The former legislator who crossed to NUP in November 2022, says they have since challenged the ruling government of National Resistance Movement (NRM) and other opposition parties after having successful transfer of power from one individual to another in a harmonious manner.

“In the time I have spent following politics in parliament, I had never seen a successor and the predecessor on the same podium to transfer power in harmony. When I was in parliament, Hon Winnie Kiiza(then LOP) was overthrown in media and we didn’t see any clear handover function,” Hon Kaluya said before calling upon others to emulate their example.

NUP according to Hon Kaluya is aimed at among others, democracy and that one of their governing principles is servant leadership which they treasure most and condemned people who support the current government without criticizing the bad side of it in rendering services to its people.
