Nine dead, three injured as Truck loaded with oranges overturns in Buikwe

Buikwe, (UG): At least nine people died on the spot and three others were injured after a Fuso truck of Reg No UBN 533T lost control and overturned in a fatal road crash in Buikwe District along the Kampala-Jinja Highway.

The 1 am Wednesday incident happened after the truck, loaded with oranges lost control and overturned at Bulyantete Village as it was headed to Kampala from Jinja City.

Ssezibwa Region Police spokesperson Helen Butoto confirmed the incident in a brief statement saying the lifeless bodies and the injured individuals were retrieved from the scene and whisked away to Kawolo Hospital for further management and postmortem.

“Bodies of 9 people have been retrieved from the accident scene and taken to Kawolo Hospital mortuary while 3 injured persons are receiving treatment at Kawolo Hospital,” Ms Butoto said.

She added that majority of the victims were passengers who had allegedly concealed themselves inside the truck using a tapeline to avoid being noticed by traffic police.

“The victims suffocated after getting trapped by the angle bars when the truck overturned. The victims had tried to conceal their identity by hiding inside the tapeline that covered the truck,” a police statement reveals.

By press time on Wednesday afternoon, Seven of the deceased remained unidentified, with only two identified so far.
