AFCON 2023: Egypt’s Salah puts 2021 heartbreak aside, aims to conquer Cote d’Ivoire edition

Egypt’s national football team’s star player, Mohamed Salah has set an unwavering determination to lead the Pharaohs to triumph in the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, following agonizing near misses in recent years.

Salah, who emphasized the profound significance of representing Egypt, candidly admitted that his ultimate goal is to lift the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON trophy, a dream thwarted twice in previous finals.

The Liverpool forward expressed the immense pride he feels donning the national team jersey, acknowledging that every moment on the field is a cherished opportunity.

Egypt, absent from the winner’s podium since Salah’s teenage years in 2010, suffered heartbreak in the 2017 and 2021 finals.

Now, at 31, Salah is determined to evade further disappointment.

“I want to win this competition. I would love to win it.” He said.

The scars of the 2017 defeat to Cameroon and the gut-wrenching missed penalty in the February 2021 shootout against Senegal serve as fuel for Salah’s mission.

The talismanic Liverpool attacker aims to exorcise Egypt’s footballing ghosts and guide them to an unprecedented eighth TotalEnergies CAF AFCON title.

As the 2023 finals loom, Egypt finds itself in Group B, facing formidable opponents in Ghana, Cape Verde, and Mozambique. Salah, having joined the squad as preparations escalate, presents a potent threat to any defence in Africa.

In the wake of recent near misses, Salah is resolute in his determination to inscribe his name into Egyptian folklore by ending the 13-year TotalEnergies CAF AFCON drought.
