Kanungu, (UG): The Territorial Police in Kigezi Region is actively hunting for one Turyasingura Joshua, for the alleged aggravated defilement and murder of a 13-year-old, identified as Kakuru Constance in Kanungu District, south-western Uganda.

Kakuru, 13, a primary pupil at Kashesha Primary School and resident of Rukarara Village, Kihembo sub-county is said to have been lured by the runaway, defiled and eventually killed in a gruesome incident which occurred on the 4th of January, 2024, at around 8 pm.

According to preliminary facts gathered by police, the victim, in the company of her twin sister, Kato Vastina and two boys, James and Ntuuri met Turyansingura when they had gone to pick up their pig, at around 7 pm, in Rukarara village.

“Along the way, they met the suspect, Turyasingura Joshua, at Ntararwe Hill, called the victim and sent her to buy for his local waragi. The victim remained with the suspect, despite pleas from her twin sister, for them to go home since it was late,” SCP Fred Enanga, the Police Spokesperson told journalists on Monday during a weekly security briefing.

As a result, Enanga says the victim was left behind with the suspect and upon reaching home, Kato one of the twins, informed their mother, how her twin sister had remained behind with the suspect.

The victim did not return till the following day on 5th Jan, prompting a search from local authorities until her body was eventually discovered in one of the banana plantations at around 9 am.

“Her body was found facing up, with both the chest area and thigh areas, naked. She was sexually assaulted, tortured and strangled to death. Her knicker was removed and recovered underneath her head, and stained with blood,” said Mr Enanga, adding that “a post-mortem was carried out on her body at Kihihi Hospital Mortuary and handed over to the relatives for burial.”

In light of the incident, police decried the gruesome murders and defilement urging the public to desist from such acts as it violates their right to live.

“We continue to face such gruesome murders of young girls, by making adults, whom they trust and respect. We should all be reminded that young children have a right to life, protection and well-being which we all have to observe as a MUST,” Mr Enanga noted.

He added that the police strongly condemn such acts of cruel and inhuman behaviour against young girls and “a serious hunt for the suspect continues and we further appeal to the public, to avail us, with any information that can lead to the arrest of the suspect.”
