Kampala, (UG): Mityana Municipality Member of Parliament, Hon Francis Zaake Butebi (NUP) has opened up to security agencies about a plot by high-ranking officials planning to ‘kill’ him.
The controversial legislator revealed the dark secrets in a post via X (formerly Twitter) saying he has credible information from a whistleblower that the high-ranking officials he did not disclose are planning to eliminate him.
“I have received credible information from a whistleblower of a plot to assassinate me,” Zaake said, adding; “I am told that the plan is being hatched by regime officials led by the head of one of the organs of Government; a regime Minister; and a high-ranking security official.”
He added; “In case the worst happens, I have shared with relevant people details of the plot and identities of the individuals involved.”
Zaake neither disclosed the identities of the officials he said were after him nor provided evidence to back up his claims, leaving Ugandans in suspense that this could be a sympathy post after his recent appointment as oppoition’s deputy chief whip in parliament was turned down by the speaker.
However, it should be noted that this is not the first time a public figure like Zaake has come to publicly express fear for their lives only to be eventually killed.
For example, the former Kampala and Nansana police boss, Muhammad Kirumira (RiP) whose post Zaake has now pinned on his X account said months before his 2018 assassination; “When you speak you die. When you keep quiet you die. Better speak and die when the message has reached people.”
The assassination claims on Zaake’s life come at a time when the outspoken opposition MP is faced with multiple disciplinary committees of Parliament for his acerbic attacks on fellow legislators.
The latest was on October 12, 2023, when Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa referred him to the Rules, Privileges, and Discipline Committee for investigations over the alleged use of vulgar language against Rakai Woman MP, Juliet Suubi Kinyamatama when he visited her constituency sometime last year.
It is alleged that during the NUP Independence Cup football tournament in Lwamaggwa village, Buyamba Constituency, Rakai District, Zaake hurled insults at Kinyamatama calling her a prostitute and questioning her suitability.
Zaake also previously faced the disciplinary committee for using social media to attack the speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, which eventually led to his dismissal as a commissioner of parliament.
