Several injured as YY Bus rams into trailer along Mbale-Tirinyi road

Kibuku, (UG): Scores of passengers on Tuesday escaped with injuries after the bus in which they were travelling lost control and rammed into a trailer at a place called Saala in Kibuku District along the Mbale Tirinyi Road.

The incident which occurred around 6:30 pm involved a Nissan Diesel Trailer UAM 966V/UAD 120L belonging to Nile Breweries Company driven by Budigo Ismail 42 years and an Isuzu bus UAX 842T belonging to YY Coaches and Courier Services driven by Mususwa Ibrahim 47 years.

According to traffic police in the area, it is alleged that both vehicles were moving in the same direction from Mbale heading to Iganga when a YY Bus came at high speed and rammed into the trailer from behind injuring its passengers.

One of the eyewitnesses said that the YY bus driver attempted to overtake the Nile Breweries trailer not knowing that another vehicle was coming from their front. Upon realizing this, he (the YY Bus driver) wanted to get back to his lane and create space for the other vehicle but he had already approached the truck leaving it with no option but to ram into the trailer.

Police said no deaths were recorded on the spot but many occupants of the YY bus survived with injuries and were rushed to Kibuku Health Center IV, but later later transferred to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for proper medication.

“The victims who were seriously injured among others were Bsikwa Sarah 40 years, Asha Ismail Bukenya 30 years and Singh Janesaparatp who were rushed to Kibuku Health Center IV later two victims (Sarah and Asha) were referred to Mbale referral hospital for further attention, ” said Bukedi North Regional Police spokesperson SP Semewo Samuel.

“Those who survived with no minor injuries were rescued and continued with the journey to Kampala in another YY coach bus UAX 880T,” he added.

There have been public concerns about the number of accidents in Saala making it an accident black spot with the one that occurred in May 2023 involving a YY coach bus UBG 400C that left some people dead.

Another one also happened at Saala in December 2023 involving a YY coach bus UAV 701C that rammed into a motorcycle and left one dead on the spot.

Mr Semewo said the scene of accident was visited and documented by IP Angella Max the DTO Kibuku and the team as the matter gets underway with the investigations.
