Kampala, (UG): The Territorial Police Division in Kampala Metropolitan South has arrested three suspects linked to the raid at former Kawmepe South MP Mubarak Munyangwa’s residence in Wakiso earlier this month.
On January 3rd, 2024, a group of thugs armed with machetes attempted to break into the home of the former legislator in Kimbejja Cell, Budo Ward, Kyengera Town Council where his security guard Benjamin Mpaka was left injured in the attack.
Two weeks later, Police have provided an update on the case registered as an aggravated robbery incident saying three more suspects have since been arrested to help with the ongoing investigations.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy PRO, Mr Luke Owoyesigyire identified the suspects as; Igga Meddy, Safari Allan, and Kwizera Mansur.
Owoyesigyire said the trio is also linked to separate incidents of the aggravated Robbery and attempted murder that transpired on December 29, 2023, involving victims Musoke Collins, Ssebufu Kenneth, Namutebi Winnie, Kalanzi Juma, Emuroni Michael, and Male Shaffic in the same Kyengera Town Council.
“During both incidents, victims sustained injuries, and valuable items, including a 65-inch television, approximately 2 million in cash, and 10 phones, were stolen. Moreover, a vehicle (Mark X – UBB043A) was vandalized at one of the targeted homes,” stated Mr Owoyesigyire.
Following thorough investigations, it was revealed that stolen phones, some containing mobile money, were traced to unauthorized transactions.
“The tireless efforts of the police resulted in the successful arrest of the trio on January 16, 2024, with the suspects found in possession of breaking implements believed to have been used in the commission of the crimes,” the deputy KMP spokesman noted.
Further investigations also led to the recovery of telephone lines associated with the illicit transfer of money during the robbery incidents, serving as vital exhibits for the prosecution of the suspects.
Operating within a larger group of 6-8 members, police say the arrested individuals primarily targeted the areas of Budo, Kimbeja, and Kyengera town councils.
“Currently, security agencies are actively pursuing other members of the group who remain at large. The public’s vigilance in providing information against criminal elements is commended, and the dedicated task teams are applauded for the successful arrest of the suspects,” said Mr Owoyesigyire.
He added that the arrested trio now face charges of aggravated robbery and attempted Murder.
