Kampala, (UG): The Police at Kira Division inare holding city lawyer identified as Sam Ahamya on murder charges after and he mistakenly shot dead a watchman at Kings Park Rugby Club in Kampala during the rugby cup final on Saturday evening.
Police in a brief statement released on Sunday morning identified the deceased as Buruga Nekeon, 37, a Lugbara by Tribe, and watchman at the rugby club, while the suspect is Ahamya of Ahamya Lawyers and Advocates is a Munyankole by tribe, lawyer and resident of Buziga – Makindye Division in Kampala District.
According to preliminary findings by police, the suspect (Ahamya) went to Kings Park Rugby Club in Bweyogerere – Kira Municipality at around midday on Saturday, January 20, 2024, together with his two children for leisure.
The report said Ahamya went to the park armed with a pistol which he left at the entrance with a police officer who was guarding there.
However, “At around 2200hrs, Ahamya got out to retrieve his weapon. Upon retrieval, he attempted to perform a Normal Safety Precaution (NSP) with the magazine still in the pistol. In the process, he shot and injured one identified as Buruga Nekeon (now deceased).”
The scene of crime was visited by a team of police officers headed by Divisional CID officer D/SP Nuwamanya and other officers including the SOCO one D/C Masereka.
Consequently, a case of murder by shooting opened vide Ref: 44/20/01/2024 has been opened up and the killer weapon was recovered and safely kept to be processed by SOCO for forensic analysis.
Ahamya is currently in custody at Kira Police Division while Buruga’s body has been conveyed to the City mortuary for postmortem examination.
