Two arrested over murder of Mayuge businessman

Mayuge, (UG): Police in Mayuge District have arrested two suspects in the gruesome murder of an 80-year-old businessman who has been dealing in sugarcane growing and other businesses in the eastern district and beyond.

Owori Alex, a resident of Kinyabwina village, Isikiro parish, Buwaaya sub-county in Mayuge district was reportedly killed on Friday and his body dumped in his garden which is about 1km away from his home.

The Busoga East Police mouthpiece SSP Diana Nandawula has identified the suspects as Enoch Ngwire, 25, a neighbor to the deceased and a resident of Kinyabwina village and another one was only identified as Ronald, a witch doctor and resident of Nabitu village in Buwaaya sub-county.

Police preliminary information indicates that the deceased left home for gardening on Friday at around 8 am but he didn’t come back and this prompted the family members to look for him and unfortunately found him in a pool of blood with various cuts on his body.

“… the preliminary information we have indicates that the deceased left home at 8 am on Saturday for his garden which is about 1km away from his home. He didn’t come back and the family members decided to trace for him and eventually landed on his body in a pool of blood with various cuts on the body before reporting the matter to police,” Nandawula said.

However, police have since learnt in their preliminary investigations that the deceased had sold his sugarcane at a tune of shs8m and that he has always preferred to move with cash money wherever he could go, something police say could have been the cause of targeting him.

“We were informed that the deceased had just sold his sugarcane recently at shs8m and he could move with his money to buy a number of things. We suspect that the killers targeted his money as he was alone in the garden,” Nandawula added.

Ms Nandawula says there are three other people on the wanted list in connection to this murder and their identity was concealed so as not to jeopardize the ongoing investigations.

The LC 3 chairperson Buwaaya sub county Mr. Hussein Kamali told Daily Express that Ngwire was arrested while heading to the witch doctor with intentions to block any progress of the case.
