Bebe Cool wants Shs200m from Airtel over abnormal data depletion

Ugandan music icon, Moses Ssali, popularly known as Bebe Cool, has threatened to institute legal proceedings against Giant telco; Airtel Uganda over its failure to account for quick data depletion and demands that the company pays him shs200m he lost by the affected business call on Zoom.

In a demand-cum-notice seen by DailyExpress, the Love You Everyday singer, revealed on Wednesday that the specific incident happened a while back when he had purchased 22 gigabytes of data at 21:56, only to receive an alert shortly after indicating that 17 gigabytes had mysteriously vanished, leaving him with just 5 gigabytes.

Bebe Cool who appeared full of rage against the telco condemned Airtel Uganda for what he deemed abnormal data depletion.

While he acknowledged that mobile data bundle depletion depends on a customer’s internet usage, he found it unreasonable that his data bundle could be depleted so fast.

“At around 10 pm, I opened my TikTok application for about five minutes whose browsing file did not exceed 300MBs and immediately put my phone at charge to prepare for my expected business meeting via Zoom,” Bebe says.

The letter, which has since been acknowledged by Airtel Uganda, sees Bebecool vebting against the unethical data depletion that antagonised his Zoom business meeting which was scheduled the same night and as a result, he has to incur travel expenses, together with his team to Lagos for a physical meeting.

Bebe further demands that as Airtel prepares to respond to the alleged data mismanagement, he should be given an inventory and usage chart of his mobile data between January 16th, 2024, at 9:56 p.m. and January 17th, 2024, at 1:00 a.m.

Additionally, he also wants Airtel to compensate him up to Ugx 200 million, comprising Ugx 100 million for travel expenses to Lagos and an additional Ugx 100 million for the unjustified self-enrichment and breach of his pre-paid agreement.

Airtel Uganda has been given 21 days from the receipt of the letter to address these grievances or else he will seek legal redress in the courts of law.
