Op-Ed: Why Museveni remains the ideal person to lead Uganda 2026 and beyond

By Brian Keitira

Despite the ever-changing political landscape in the country, President Museveni has proven time and again that he is the best candidate to lead Uganda into the next era of development and progress.

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has been the ruling party in Uganda since 1986, and under President Museveni’s leadership, the country has seen tremendous growth and development. From economic stability, and good governance, to infrastructure development, President Museveni has continuously worked to improve the standard of living for Ugandans.

One of the key factors that sets President Museveni apart from other politicians in Uganda is his unwavering commitment to the well-being of the citizens. Throughout his tenure, he has prioritized initiatives such as education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation, all of which have had a direct impact on the lives of the people.

His policies and programs have led to significant improvements in these areas, making him a popular choice among the masses.

For instance, he has always advocated for a shift of the 38% of Ugandans who are in subsistence farming to join the money economy and this has been seen through his wealth creation programs such as the Rural farmer’s scheme in the early 1990s, Entandikwa in the run-up to 1996, Bonna Bagaggawale in 2007, the Youth Capital Venture that later became Youth livelihood Program, Operation Wealth Creation in 2014, Emyooga and the current Parish Development Model; all aimed at boosting household incomes and reducing poverty.

President Museveni’s leadership has also been instrumental in maintaining peace and stability in the country. Uganda which was once plagued by political instability, conflict, chaos and civil war under the military dictatorship of Idi Amin in the 1970s and the Presidency of Milton Obote in the early 1980s has seen a significant decrease in violence and unrest under his rule.

He defeated Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army ( LRA), and he arrested and flushed Jamil Mukuru’s Allied for Democratic Front (ADF) from Uganda and Congo. His efforts to foster a peaceful and secure environment have not gone unnoticed, and the people of Uganda appreciate the sense of security that his leadership provides.

Furthermore, President Museveni’s experience and understanding of global politics make him the ideal candidate to navigate Uganda through the challenges of the 21st century. His diplomatic skills and ability to build strong international relations have positioned Uganda as a respected member of the global community.

This has been seen in his efforts to bring about peace in the region by deploying the UPDF in countries like Somalia, DR Congo, and Central African Republic to ensure there is peace. It is against this background that he is now the Chairperson of Non-Aligned Movement and G-77 Countries plus China for the next three years. All this makes Ugandans safe in his hands for a better future.

Despite the numerous achievements and positive impacts of President Museveni’s leadership, there are still critics who argue that it is time for a change. The reality is, that the progress made under his leadership cannot be overlooked or dismissed. It is crucial for the country to continue on the path of development and prosperity, which is best achieved by retaining a proven leader like President Museveni.

A person of Museveni’s calibre who has been in the liberation struggle of Africa for more than 50 years can’t be overlooked. No wonder the Bazzukulu under the auspices of Hajjat Hadijjah Namyalo the head of Office of The National Chairman NRM are saying “#JajjaTovaKuMain2026”

As the political arena in Uganda continues to evolve, it is essential to recognise the value of stability and experience in leadership. President Museveni’s track record speaks for itself, and it is clear that he is the most qualified candidate to lead Uganda in the coming years other than the inexperienced political scavengers who are misleading our Youth.

The challenges and opportunities that lie ahead demand strong and visionary leadership, and President Museveni has consistently demonstrated these qualities throughout his time in office. The people of Uganda would be wise to support his leadership in the forthcoming 2026 general elections and beyond.
