Museveni to launch new NRM register ahead of 2026 elections

Kampala, (UG): President Yoweri Museveni, the National Chairman of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) political party will this Wednesday, February 28, 2024 launch the update of its register, a significant administrative task aimed at the combing out the non existent and weevil members in its register.

The exercise, which acts as a precursor to the much-anticipated 2026 general elections and synchronized with the electoral commission roadmap will take place at the NRM Secretariat Head Offices – Kyandondo Road in Kampala.

The Party Secretary General, Rt Hon Richard Todwong and the Office of the National Chairman Manager who is also President Museveni’s Senior Political Advisor, Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo Uzeiye, both of whom are pivotal in the NRM Mobilization activities are also expected to grace the launch.

According to sources from within the Party’s Secretariat, updating the register is seen as a vital step in ensuring the accuracy and currency of the NRM’s internal records.

“These records are the bedrock of a smooth nomination and election process within the party. The intricate task may involve verifying the party members’ details, rectifying inconsistencies, and ensuring that all eligible members are correctly recorded in the NRM’s systems,s said a source from with the Kyadondo-based party offices.

“This activity is not merely clerical. It is a manifestation of the party’s efforts to organize and prepare for the upcoming elections. A reliable and transparent register is the cornerstone of internal democracy and the credibility of the internal electoral processes. It is a sign of the party’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process,” adds the source.

The development comes just days after President Museveni on Friday held a high level meeting with the party’s top leadership where among others discussions pertaining to the roadmap for the 2026 elections took center stage.
